CERTIFICATION:

Membership in Shop Local 850, use of our trademarks, and participation in our campaigns is only available to independent local businesses* that meet our certification standards:

  • 100% Independent. (Our litmus test asks whether or not the owner/owners could make any changes they wanted to their company logo.)
  • Majority local ownership. (More than 50% of the company, or the largest percentage of shares, is owned by residents of Tallahassee, Gadsden, Wakulla, or Jefferson counties.)
  • Fair industry wages for employees. (Meaning benefits or compensation above the legal minimum requirement).
  • >15% sourced locally. (Restaurants and food services only)
  • 10% giveback. (Through donations, sponsorships, gift certificates, in-kind donations, or other charitable contributions to community non-profit causes.)

A surpassing measurement for any of these criteria may offset a deficit in another, as determined on a case-by-case basis. For example, a company that does not meet the 10% giveback threshold may still qualify for membership because it offers health coverage to its employees. This is at the sole discretion of Shop Local 850. 

You will be asked to complete a detailed form after payment. If we have any questions after submission, we will contact you. If we decline your membership, your fee will be fully refunded.

We value franchises and chains as integral parts of our economy (there is no such thing as a locally made cell phone, after all), but our mission is to support local entrepreneurs who, at their own risk and investment, endeavor to build thriving businesses without the benefit of regional or national marketing campaigns, brand recognition, economies of scale in purchasing options, and other resources available through those business models.
